Walt Woltosz holds a bachelor’s and master’s from Auburn University in Aerospace Engineering, 1969 and 1977, a master’s in administrative sciences from the University of Alabama in Huntsville, 1976, and was awarded an honorary Doctor of Science from Auburn in 2021. He served in the USAF from 1963-1968, coming to Auburn under the Airman Education and Commissioning Program (AECP). He worked as an electronics engineer with the Federal Aviation Administration, as an aerospace engineer with Northrop Services developing simulation/optimization computer programming for the space shuttle ascent trajectory, then with Thiokol Huntsville, the US Air Force Rocket Propulsion Laboratory at Edwards AFB, and United Technologies Chemical Systems division in Sunnyvale, CA, where he pioneered the numerical optimization of solid rocket motors and missile systems. In 1981, he and his wife, Ginger established Words+, Inc., a company that designed, manufactured, and sold computer-based communication systems for people with severe disabilities, including world-famous physicist Professor Stephen Hawking. His work in this area radically transformed the way in which people with disabilities communicate. He and Ginger started Simulations Plus, Inc. (Nasdaq: SLP) in 1996 to develop simulation and modeling software for pharmaceutical R&D. The company now has 240 employees in several countries. Woltosz previously served on the Auburn University Foundation Board of Directors; 2014-2021.
Woltosz was confirmed as an Auburn Trustee by the Alabama Senate on March 21, 2024, for a seven-year term that will expire on March 20, 2031. Woltosz is married to Ginger Woltosz.
