Miller graduated from Auburn in 1980 with a bachelor's degree in civil engineering and later completed the Wharton Executive Program on Financial Management at the University of Pennsylvania. He held various project management positions with Brown & Root in Houston, Texas, and Venezuela, before joining Birmingham-based Harbert Corporation in 1985.

He was a founding partner and played a key role in the company's transformation into Harbert Management Corporation, an independent investment firm focused on fundamentally based private and public market strategies. He served as HMC's executive vice president and chief financial officer from 2002 through 2011, when he became executive vice president and global head of distribution.

During his career, he also has served in various treasury and financial management roles, including treasurer and director of corporate acquisitions. His current responsibilities include the management of all fundraising, capital acquisition, and investor relations operations. He is a life member of the Auburn Alumni Association, and together, he and his wife Lisa are members of Auburn's 1856 Society. They have two children.
