Byrd earned a bachelor’s degree in accountancy from Auburn University in 1989 and a law degree from Cumberland Law School in 1992. He is a Partner with Bradley Arant in Birmingham, Alabama.

Byrd is a past president of the Auburn Alumni Association. He serves on the Master of Real Estate Development Advisory Board. He is a member of the Petrie Society, 1856 Society, the Shug Jordan Society, and the Foy Society (15 Years).
